According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program, there are many children living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that need early intervention, support, and services in their communities, now and through development into adolescence and further into adulthood. Furthermore, the CDC reports that one in six children in the United States have one or more developmental disabilities or delays. The prevalence of ASD and developmental disabilities in children in Metropolitan Atlanta proves a need for an intervention. In response, it is important to implement a sensory integration and developmental support center to provide services to this growing and underrepresented population of children. The purpose of the intervention is to improve the sensory, cognitive, social, and motor skills of infants and children with ASD or other developmental delays who regularly use the center.
Our research team is looking for infants and children 6 months old to 12 years old with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or an intellectual/cognitive developmental delay. The project involves the evaluation of skill improvement developed through guided play at the center. The study awards the participants with free visits throughout the duration of the study.
